Engine Creek Trail

The Engine Creek Trail is a 3.4-mile point-to-point hiking route in the San Juan National Forest near Silverton, Colorado. It serves as a technical backcountry alternative to the more crowded Engineer Mountain Trail, connecting with the Colorado Trail system. The trail climbs approximately 1,959 feet, reaching an elevation range of 9,542 to 11,502 feet. The terrain features steep switchbacks, occasional step-downs, and rocky sections, particularly in the upper half where signage can be broken or hard to see. Water is abundant along the creek, though purification is recommended due to Giardia. The trail allows hiking, biking, and dogs. Access is possible from two main points: the Molas Pass area via Forest Service Road 585 and South Mineral Creek, or from the Cascade Creek side near Highway 550. Parking is available at trailheads, though the route often requires a preliminary hike to reach the main trailhead, making it suitable for day hikes or overnight trips.
