About

Engineer Mountain Summit is a 12,942-foot peak located southwest of Silverton, Colorado, accessible via Coalbank Pass on US Highway 550. The hike is classified as difficult and typically takes four hours to complete over a distance of 6.7 miles. The route begins with a forested ascent through Pass Creek Trail, which transitions into an open meadow after approximately 2.5 miles. From the meadow, hikers follow an unofficial but well-traveled path marked by rock cairns. The final pitch involves a steep, technical scramble with significant exposure and elevation gain of roughly 1,300 feet over less than one mile. This section often requires the use of hands (Class 2 terrain). The trail offers 360-degree views of the San Juan Mountains and features wildflowers in July, August, and September. Winter conditions bring avalanche danger, requiring caution and potentially additional gear. Parking is available at the Coalbank Pass lot, though it fills quickly on weekends. A four-wheel-drive vehicle with good clearance is recommended for accessing the trailhead, although a two-wheel drive may suffice depending on conditions.
