Engineer Summit Trail

The Engineer Summit Trail is a difficult, short hike near Silverton in the San Juan Mountains. The route begins at Coal Bank Pass on Highway 550 and climbs steeply to a summit of approximately 12,968 feet. The total distance is roughly six miles round trip with about 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Hikers typically complete the trail in five hours. The path starts on the Pass Creek Trail, which winds through pine and aspen forests for about 2.5 miles to a meadow. From the meadow, an unofficial but well-marked trail ascends directly up Engineer Mountain. This final section covers less than one mile and gains roughly 1,300 feet through scrambling and technical terrain. Rock cairns guide the way to a viewpoint known as Eagle's Nest before continuing to the top. The trail offers 360-degree views of the San Juans and features distinctive layered rock formations near the summit. Wildflowers bloom in July, and the meadow provides a resting area with views. The trail is accessible year-round, though winter conditions bring significant avalanche danger and potential snow cover. Summer hikers should start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms and crowded parking lots at Coal Bank Pass. No permit is required, and dogs are allowed if leashed.
