The Fryingpan River is a Gold Medal tailwater located in Western Colorado, flowing from below the Ruedi Dam near Basalt to its confluence with the Roaring Fork River. The river spans 14 miles and offers year-round fly fishing, with moderate difficulty due to educated trout populations. The primary species include brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout, with average sizes of 12 to 16 inches. The river is known for its mysis shrimp, which fuel large fish growth, and stable water temperatures between 38 and 52 degrees Fahrenheit. Fishing conditions vary by season: summer brings Green Drake hatches, autumn offers fall colors and big fish, spring features Caddis and Blue Wing Olive hatches, and winter provides midge fishing with smaller crowds. The upper section near the dam, known as the Toilet Bowl or Flats, receives heavy pressure and requires long leaders and small patterns. Access is drive-in and walk-and-wade, with public access points along the 8 to 9 miles of river within White River National Forest land. Parking is available, and pets are permitted. A fishing permit is required for the Toilet Bowl area. The river flows at rates typically between 150 and 400 cubic feet per second, with regulations limiting anglers to artificial flies and lures.
