About
The Gothic Mountain Summit Off-Trail Route is a 1.6-mile difficult hike located near Gunnison and Crested Butte, Colorado. The route reaches a 12,481-foot summit with an elevation gain that classifies it as challenging. Hikers typically complete the trek in about one hour, though this depends on route-finding and scrambling. The trailhead begins near 9,600 feet along Gothic Road (CR-317) or Washington Gulch Road. Parking is available at the base, and an unpaved but well-graded road provides access for standard vehicles under dry conditions. The path involves steep, rocky sections with loose rock and requires scrambling skills. Snow cover is common from January through June and may persist into September or December. Wildflower meadows, including fireweed, appear along the lower slopes, and pika are present in the area. The route offers views of the Elk Range 13ers and passes eroded pinnacles used by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. The trail is generally closed during winter months due to snow accumulation.
