About

The Groundhog Stock Trail is a moderate 6-mile mountain biking route located near Silverton and Rico on Colorado's Western Slope. The trail sits at an elevation of 9,311 feet and typically takes about two hours to complete. It runs along the Lizardhead Wilderness boundary as a non-motorized multi-use path, allowing bikes, horses, and pedestrians. Riders access the trail from parking areas near Lizard Head Pass or Cross Mountain. The route offers descents in both directions, with a 1.5-mile downhill section available when riding south to north back toward Lizard Head Pass. Common configurations include an out-and-back ride, a loop connecting with Dunton Road and Highway 145, or use as a shuttle route. The trail is accessible from April through October, subject to snow conditions. It is pet-friendly with dogs required on leashes in some contexts, and parking is available at the trailheads.
