About
Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, located just southwest of Gunnison, Colorado, is a high-desert landscape defined by rolling hills, scrub oak, sagebrush, and distinctive granite outcroppings. The area spans over 14,000 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management, offering 45 miles of singletrack trails suitable for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. The terrain is characterized as rocky and technical, featuring slickrock, sand, and interconnecting trails that wind through the basin. For fall hiking, conditions are typically dry with little to no snow from September through November, providing stable footing on the varied elevation. The site sits at an elevation of 7,999 feet. Access is straightforward with parking available at the base area, which includes accessible restrooms and designated campsites. While the area is pet-friendly and free of charge, visitors should note that there is no potable water or developed facilities beyond the base area; campsites are primitive and first-come, first-served. The moderate difficulty of the trails allows for flexible exploration, with many routes accessible within a few hours.
