The High Five trail is a moderate, multi-use route located near Gunnison on the Western Slope of Colorado. The trailhead sits at an elevation of 7,705 feet, with the path traversing terrain between 7,810 and 7,920 feet. It covers approximately 0.4 miles with a total elevation gain of about 110 feet. The surface is dirt, and the route allows for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and motorcycle use. Parking is available at the start of the trail. The High Five trail is accessible year-round. Winter conditions often bring snow and ice, while summer months tend to be dry and dusty. The trail is managed by the BLM Gunnison Field Office, which also oversees access to Hartman Rocks. Dogs are permitted on the trail. While not inside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, the High Five trail is in close proximity to the area. Hikers using this route may encounter similar landscape features, such as mountain views and canyon proximity, though the trail itself does not feature the steep drop-offs or stairs found on Black Canyon’s South Rim trails. Water availability in the immediate vicinity follows regional patterns, with limited drinking water available in nearby parks from late fall through mid-spring. Cattle grazing is permitted in the broader area, and hikers should be aware of bear activity in the region, keeping food secured. The trail is suitable for hikers with some experience due to its moderate classification, though it remains accessible to beginners.
