Irwin Lake Trail

The Irwin Lake Trail is a hiking route in Gunnison National Forest near Crested Butte and Gunnison. The trail leads to Lake Irwin, a scenic reservoir at approximately 10,200 to 10,700 feet elevation. The trail system includes variations; one route is a 1.3-mile moderate hike, while other loops extend to roughly 2 to 2.75 miles with an elevation range of 10,328 to 10,721 feet. The trail descends toward the lake and travels north of the water body. It is accessible year-round, with summer offering wildflower views and winter conditions allowing for snowmobile and snowshoe use on designated sections. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash. Parking is available at the trailhead off Forest Service Road 826.1C (Irwin Lodge Road) and via CR 826. The trail is suitable for families and beginners, though high altitude may add difficulty. Camping is allowed in the surrounding area.
