The Judd Falls trail near Crested Butte provides a moderate hiking experience within the Gunnison National Forest. The trail begins at the Copper Creek Trailhead, located approximately four miles north of Mount Crested Butte. Access is via Gothic Road (CO 317). A standard parking area for two-wheel-drive vehicles sits on the left side of the road, with an additional upper lot available for high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles further up the dirt road. The route ascends roughly 450 feet over a distance of about 2.3 miles round trip, typically taking two hours to complete. The path transitions from a wide dirt road through aspen groves to narrower, rocky terrain near the falls. The trail is well-marked and maintained by the Crested Butte Conservation Corps. Visitors can view Judd Falls from a stone bench at the end of the main trail, with steep options available for closer views. The area is home to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, which owns significant portions of the land and requires hikers to stay on the trail to protect testing sites. The site is pet-friendly, though dogs are not permitted in Conundrum Valley beyond the trailhead. Fall hiking is supported by abundant aspen foliage, with peak colors occurring between September and November. Early snow and cooler temperatures are common at the trailhead elevation of 9,583 feet. Restrooms and free summer bus service are available in the vicinity.
