About
The Jumbo Ridge Loop is a difficult, expert-level mountain biking route located near Paonia, Colorado, on public BLM land within the Jumbo Mountain Special Recreation Management Area. The trail is approximately 7 to 8.1 miles long with an elevation gain of roughly 1,400 feet, reaching a maximum elevation near 6,969 feet. It typically takes riders about 3 hours to complete. The route begins at the Jumbo Mountain trailhead, accessible by heading east on Pan American Avenue from downtown Paonia. Parking is available at Apple Valley Park or in limited spaces at the top of the hill near the Forest Service office. Riders must pass through a gate to access the trail system, which includes Gully Trail, Slant n' Dicular, and Jumbo Ridge. The climb features switchbacks up Slant n' Dicular to the Grassy Knoll, offering views of the West Elk mountain range. The upper section involves exposure and rough terrain, with the final 200 feet requiring hike-a-bike to reach the summit. The descent is technical and fun, crossing the upper flank of Jumbo Mountain. The trail is rideable from April through October and is pet-friendly.
