Junction Trail

The Junction Creek Trail is a 19-mile one-way route in the San Juan National Forest, serving as the southern terminus of the Colorado Trail near Durango. Starting at an elevation of 7,000 feet, the trail follows Junction Creek northward. The initial segment is mild and flat, making it accessible for beginners and families. At approximately 2.5 miles, hikers cross a wooden footbridge; beyond this point, the terrain steepens with switchbacks leading toward Gudy's Rest at mile 3.8, which offers views toward Durango. The trail continues to Kennebec Pass, gaining 4,790 feet of elevation. Key features include shallow pools along the creek in summer, poison ivy in the flood plains, and potential flash floods. The trail supports hiking, biking, and winter recreation. Restrooms are available at the trailhead and are open seasonally. Parking is limited at the Junction Creek Trailhead, located off Junction Creek Road.
