About

The Lake Hope Out and Back trail is a moderate 6.3-mile hike located near Silverton, Colorado, on the Western Slope. The route climbs to an elevation of 9,311 feet and typically takes about four hours to complete. The trailhead is accessible via a 4.5-mile road from Lake Trout, which generally requires four-wheel drive and high-clearance vehicles, though walking or mountain biking the road is a viable alternative. The first mile through sub-alpine forest has minimal elevation gain, while the remaining distance is steeper and rockier. Hikers pass streams and reach views of Trout Lake, Lizard Head, and Vermillion Mountain. The trail continues over a saddle above the lake before descending back to the start. Parking is available at the trailhead. The route is open year-round, but winter conditions often make the road and trail impassable due to deep snow. Fall colors peak in mid-to-late September, with potential for rapidly changing weather and ice in the streams. The trail can be muddy after precipitation.
