Lay It Back is a single-pitch trad climbing route located on the Right Side of Dry Creek Crag, approximately 14 miles west of Montrose, Colorado. Situated at an elevation of 5,328 feet on the Uncompahgre Plateau, the route is a 40-foot climb rated around 5.8. The climb begins in a broad hog corner and utilizes classic layback technique, relying on hand jams and ample footholds. The route is suitable for climbers with some experience who can manage gear placement. Protection requires larger cams, typically ranging from size #2 to #6 in Black Diamond sizing. While the route can be set up for top-roping using an existing two-bolt anchor with chains and rings, it is designed as a lead climb. Climbers should bring helmets due to potential loose rock near the anchor platform. The approach involves a solid trail through sagebrush and pine groves, with southeast-facing walls that can be hot in the midday sun. Early mornings or late afternoons are recommended for comfort. Access is straightforward from Montrose, with parking available at the area. The site is pet-friendly and open year-round, though conditions vary by season. The rock quality is generally good, featuring reassuring texture and uneven edges that test friction.
