The Lions Den Trail is a 1.1-mile moderate hiking route in Durango, Colorado, located near Fort Lewis College and the Chapman Hill Ice Rink. The trail ascends from a gravel parking lot on the north side of the ice rink, following switchbacks to an elevation of 6,968 feet. The route is multi-use and shares the path with bikers, requiring caution from hikers. A bench midway up offers views of the Animas Valley and serves as a common turnaround point for shorter outings. The summit features a brick-covered area overlooking the city of Durango and the La Plata Mountains, along with a City of Durango picnic pavilion. Amenities near the upper trailhead include restrooms, playgrounds, and softball fields. The trail is accessible year-round, though conditions vary by season, with March through November offering the most reliable access. The surface is primarily ground and dirt, suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
