Little Molas Lake

Little Molas Lake is a primitive, no-fee campground located in the San Juan National Forest, approximately two miles west of the larger Molas Lake (Big Molas Lake) and adjacent to Molas Pass. Situated at nearly 11,000 feet in elevation, the site offers direct access to the Colorado Trail and the Million Dollar Highway (US 550) south of Silverton. The campground consists of roughly 10 to 20 designated primitive campsites, suitable for tents and smaller RVs, with some spots accommodating horse trailers. Facilities are basic, including vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits with grills, but there is no potable water or trash service. Access is via an unpaved road; while most cars can reach the lake during good weather, high-clearance 4WD vehicles are recommended for the Alpine Loop connection. The site is open from late spring through fall, typically closing when snow covers the access road. Wildlife sightings commonly include waterfowl, jays, woodpeckers, squirrels, and snowshoe hares. Non-motorized boating is permitted in the lake.
