Located on the Western Slope at an elevation of 6,535 feet, the trail offers a steady climb through pine forests and open terrain. It serves as an alternative route to the summit of Animas Mountain, featuring switchbacks and grade reversals that make the ascent reasonable despite steep upper sections. Hikers gain views of Chapman Lake, Junction Creek, and the La Plata Mountains to the west, as well as Animas Valley to the north. The trail is accessible year-round with parking available at the start. Typical completion time is approximately 20 minutes.
