About

The Lupine Trail in Crested Butte offers a moderate, two-hour hike through the Slate River valley. The trailhead sits off Gothic Road and County Road 734, near Nicholson Lake. Parking is available at the Slate River Trailhead but can be restricted on Saddle Ridge Ranch Road and Gothic Road. The route runs as an out-and-back on a dirt two-track road, gaining approximately 400 feet of elevation to reach an altitude of about 9,230 feet. The trail stays on a private easement, requiring hikers to remain on the marked path. Fall conditions from September through November highlight aspen colors alongside mountain views of Mount Crested Butte and the town. The trail is open to dogs, bikes, and horses. It serves as a popular route for both hiking and mountain biking.
