The journey typically takes about three hours to complete and offers year-round access. Parking is available at the trailhead. The route begins by following the road uphill from the Lenado Trailhead parking area. After crossing a bridge, hikers stay right as the road forks and continues uphill for approximately one mile. At a left-turning switchback, the well-marked Johnson Creek Trail branches to the right. Hikers follow this trail for 1.5 miles until reaching a wide road, where they turn right and travel slightly downhill for 0.25 mile. The path then climbs gradually for another two miles before reaching a left fork or switchback that leads to a short climb toward a saddle. North of the saddle, hikers join another wide road, turn right, and traverse 0.5 mile. Finally, a right turn leads past a marked fence directly to Margy's Hut. Winter conditions often require additional gear such as snowshoes or crampons, though the trail remains accessible. The route is frequently used in winter and features views to the south along the way. New York Mountain, a 12,550-foot peak, is accessible from this trailhead and offers views of Eagle, Hardscrabble Mountain, Red Table Mountain, Edwards, and surrounding 12,000- and 13,000-foot peaks. Noland Lake lies to the southwest of New York Mountain. Fall hikes may feature yellow aspen and birch trees.
