About

The Maroon Bells Scenic Area in Aspen, Colorado, offers a moderate fall hike centered on the iconic twin peaks and Maroon Lake. The trailhead sits near 9,600 feet elevation. The primary attraction is the fall foliage display, where golden aspen groves surround the deep red pyramids of the Maroon Bells. Peak color typically occurs from late September into early October, though timing shifts annually based on temperature and elevation. The weather is cool and changeable. Sunrise temperatures can approach freezing, while afternoon storms are possible. The standard Maroon Bells Loop Trail takes about two hours to complete. It is considered easy and family-friendly, leading to some of the most photographed mountain scenes in North America. Access requires a reservation between May and October. Visitors can choose a timed vehicle parking pass for $10 or a shuttle reservation departing from Aspen Highlands for $16. Shuttle riders do not need a separate parking pass at the trailhead. Campground reservations also exempt visitors from parking fees. The area is pet-friendly and allows e-bikes, which pay a $5 amenity fee. Trails include the Maroon Lake Loop, West Maroon Trail, American Lake Trail, and Cathedral Lake Trail. The area is managed by the US Forest Service within the White River National Forest.
