About

The Molas to Engine Creek route is a difficult, point-to-point mountain biking trail in Silverton, Colorado. It connects Molas Pass to Engine Creek, offering a significant day ride characterized by steep climbs and technical descents. The trail spans approximately 73 miles if taken as part of the full Colorado Trail, but serves as a popular single-day segment. Riders face approximately 2,800 vertical feet of climbing and 5,000 feet of descending. The route begins at the Little Molas Lake trailhead or Molas Pass, traversing high alpine benches and rocky ridges before dropping into the Engine Creek trail. The descent features rough rock gardens, sheer ledge drops, and tight switchbacks, earning a black-diamond rating. The terrain transitions from open alpine zones with red rock and wildflowers into dense pine forests with dark dirt and slick roots. Parking is available at the trailhead, and pets are permitted. The trail is accessible from April through October, though conditions vary with weather and maintenance.
