About

Murder Train is a rock climbing destination on the Grand Mesa, located approximately 10,476 feet above sea level in Western Colorado. The site is classified as difficult, making it suitable for experienced climbers seeking challenging routes. The area features parking and allows pets. Climbing activity occurs year-round, with conditions varying from summer warmth to winter snow and ice. The Grand Mesa itself is a large volcanic plateau capped with basalt, formed by lava flows roughly 10 million years ago. The rock quality is generally high in areas where thick volcanic flow events created steep walls, though large buttresses are rare due to the fractured nature of the basalt. Access is primarily via Grand Junction, reachable by driving east on I-70 to Exit 49 or south on US Highway 50 past Whitewater. The site is situated within the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests.
