Needle Rock Trailhead serves as the access point for a 0.8-mile out-and-back hike to an iconic volcanic plug near Crawford, Colorado. The trail climbs steeply to the base of the basalt formation, which rises approximately 800 feet above the Gunnison River Valley. This moderate route is suitable for hiking, rock climbing, and photography, with a typical duration of about two hours. The trail is located within the Needle Rock Wilderness Study Area on the Colorado Plateau. Fall is a prime season for viewing foliage, though the trail remains accessible from March through October. Amenities at the trailhead include parking and restrooms, with no fee required. Pets are allowed on the trail. The area supports raptors, small mammals, and vegetation including oak, serviceberry, and juniper. Note that while the trail offers views, it does not reach the peak used by rock climbers.
