The Nighthorse Trail is a short, moderate hike located southwest of Durango, Colorado, leading along the shoreline of Lake Nighthorse, a manmade reservoir formed by the Ridges Basin Dam. The route follows a well-maintained dirt service road, offering views of the lake and surrounding tree-covered hills. The trail is accessible to hikers, runners, cyclists, and dogs, though dogs must be on a leash. The path extends approximately 1.12 miles to a barrier near the dam, where public access ends, requiring a return trip along the same route. The area is managed by Durango Parks and Recreation and requires a day pass, typically costing between $4 and $10, or an annual vehicle pass. The trail is open year-round and is considered easy to moderate, suitable for families and various fitness levels. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, brown trout, and kokanee salmon.
