About

The Paradox Trail is a 118-mile hiking and mountain biking route located in western Montrose County, Colorado. It connects the Tabeguache Trail on the Uncompahgre Plateau to the Kokokelli Trail in Utah, forming the southern leg of the Grand Loop. The trail traverses high desert terrain with elevations ranging from 4,800 feet along the Dolores River to 9,500 feet on the Uncompahgre Plateau. The route utilizes old backcountry jeep roads and trails, with most sections being two-track paths suitable for hiking. The difficulty is rated as strenuous due to the length and elevation changes, though many sections are accessible for day hikes. Established in 1995 by the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association and other agencies, the trail passes through BLM and USFS lands. Hikers should carry water, food, maps, or GPS units as services are limited. The town of Nucla offers the only direct food supplies along the route. Wildlife including elk, mountain lions, coyotes, and rattlesnakes are common. The best season for hiking is early spring to late fall. Parking is available at trailheads, and the trail is accessible year-round.
