Perins Peak State Wildlife Area is a 7,720-acre managed habitat located just outside Durango, Colorado. The primary hiking destination is Perins Peak, which rises to 8,346 feet. The main trail is a 7-mile roundtrip hike that begins at the trailhead on Perins Vista Drive. The route ascends through open grasslands and ponderosa pines to the summit, offering expansive views of the Southwest. The terrain includes uneven ground and inclines, classifying the hike as moderate to difficult. The typical duration is approximately two hours. Access is open from September through November, though specific zones have seasonal closures: public access west of La Plata CR 208 is prohibited from December 1 to April 30, and access east of the road is prohibited from December 1 to July 31. A valid hunting or fishing license or a State Wildlife Area (SWA) pass is required for visitors 16 and older. Parking is available at the trailhead. Pets are permitted on leash from May 1 to September 30 in the western zone and August 1 to September 30 in the eastern zone. The area is also a habitat for raptors, songbirds, and various game species including elk, deer, and black bears.
