About

The Rio Grande Trail is a 42-mile paved path connecting Glenwood Springs to Aspen along the Roaring Fork River. Originally a railroad corridor, it is now managed by the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) for recreation and commuting. The trail gains approximately 2,100 feet over its length, providing a gentle incline suitable for hiking, biking, and walking. Most of the trail is asphalt, though one section near Aspen remains unpaved. Amenities include benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles, and dog waste stations. Potable water is available at the Basalt Trailhead, and vault toilets are located near Cattle Creek and Catherine Store Bridge. Parking is available at various points along the route, with the Glenwood Springs Visitor Center serving as a central information hub. The trail is open year-round; winter sections between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale are plowed when snowfall exceeds 3 inches. Wildlife sightings often include bald eagles and elk. The trail is busy with mixed traffic, so hikers should yield to horses, watch for cyclists, and keep dogs leashed.
