The Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park offers a moderate fall hiking experience located five miles south of Pagosa Springs along Highway 84. The facility sits in the San Juan Mountain Range at an elevation of approximately 7,320 feet. The trail is a half-mile walking path made of gravel that winds through the park's landscape. Hikers typically spend about two hours at the site, which includes time for the daily feeding tour. The park is open year-round with specific hours shifting between summer and winter schedules. Fall visits occur from September through November, coinciding with the transition to shorter winter hours starting in October. The trail has limited shade and can be muddy or icy, requiring appropriate footwear such as snow boots in colder months. The park is home to non-releasable animals native to the area, including elk, bear, cougar, wolf, grizzly, and bobcat. A daily feeding tour lasts approximately one hour and begins at 3:00 PM in the summer and 2:00 PM in the winter. Parking is available on-site, and pets are permitted. Restrooms are provided for visitors. The facility has been open since 1986 and is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
