About

The Rough Canyon Trail is a 2.4-mile difficult hike located in the Bangs Canyon Management Area south of Grand Junction, Colorado. The trail begins at the Bangs Canyon Trailhead with parking available and descends from an elevation of approximately 6,072 feet. Hikers follow a path through narrow gates into the canyon, navigating rugged terrain that includes scrambling over boulders and rocky sections. The route follows Ladder Creek, offering views of deep ravines, towering cliffs, and seasonal waterfalls. Small pools form where the creek cascades down. The middle section is primitive, requiring careful navigation around rock falls, while the upper rim features a narrow ledge. The trail connects with the Tabeguache Trail, allowing for a loop option via the Four-Wheel Drive/ATV trail back to the start. The area supports hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. Vegetation includes cottonwood trees, oaks, and poison ivy. The trail is accessible year-round, though summer heat can be intense with limited shade, and winter snow may require extra preparation. The hike typically takes about two hours.
