The San Miguel River is a freestone fishery located near Telluride, Colorado, offering moderate difficulty fishing accessible from April through October. The river begins in high alpine headwaters above Telluride at approximately 8,750 feet and flows northwest for about 45 miles before transitioning into warmer water near the confluence with the Dolores River. The primary section for anglers runs along Highway 145 between Telluride and Placerville, providing easy roadside access. This stretch features cold water with average depths of 1 to 3 feet, characterized by pocket water and riffles that hold aggressive brown and rainbow trout. Cutbow hybrids are also common in the upper cold-water stretches. While snowmelt from the San Juan Mountains can increase flows and reduce accessibility through mid-June, July and August offer prime conditions with clearer water. Brown trout in this corridor typically average 12 to 16 inches, while rainbows are mixed throughout. The river supports both wading and floating, with guided half-day and full-day trips available from local outfitters. Parking is available along the route, and the area is pet-friendly. Anglers should note that water temperatures rise in the lower sections near Norwood and Naturita during late summer, requiring attention to fish activity in warmer stretches. The San Miguel receives less pressure than nearby tailwaters like the Dolores below McPhee Reservoir, making it a consistent option for year-round fishing despite seasonal flow variations.
