Segment 6: Nucla to Durango

Segment 6 of the Plateau Passage connects Nucla to Durango on Colorado's Western Slope. The route covers moderate difficulty terrain with an elevation of 6,535 feet at the Durango end. The trail begins with a 4,000-foot climb to the Uncompahgre Plateau crest using Paradox Trail singletrack, gravel roads, and 4x4 tracks. Once on the plateau, riders follow Divide Road southeast toward the San Juan Mountains. The route passes near Ridgeway and Ouray, offering resupply options including restaurants and lodging. Beyond Ouray, the path climbs steeply via Highway 550 and rough 4x4 roads toward Engineer Pass. The route continues through Silverton, climbs to Rolling Mountain Pass at over 12,000 feet, and descends via singletrack near Purgatory Resort. The final leg includes the 20-mile Hermosa Creek Trail and pavement into Durango. Parking is available along the route. Pets are permitted. The trail is open from April through October, though afternoon thunderstorms are common at high elevations above treeline. Water availability is sufficient after the first 30 miles.
