About
The Smelter Mountain Trail is a 4.2-mile out-and-back route located just south of Durango, Colorado. The trail is classified as difficult and typically requires about three hours to complete. It begins in a dirt parking area at the base of the mountain, which also serves as Durango's off-leash dog area. Hikers descend slightly from the lot, cross a small stream, and then climb steadily up a rocky hill. The ascent gains approximately 1,000 to 1,200 feet over a distance of roughly one mile to the summit. The route offers clear views south and east toward the Animas Valley and downtown Durango. While the trail is accessible year-round, it observes seasonal wildlife closures from December 1 to April 15. The best visiting window is generally April through November. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed on the trail, though they may remain off-leash at the base. The trail is closed to bicycles and is not open for snowshoeing during the closure period.
