About
South Meadow is a short, easy hiking loop near Durango, Colorado, located in the Fall Creek Valley area. The trailhead begins at a main parking area accessible from Falls Creek Road (County Road 205), with additional parking spots available along the road itself. From the parking area, hikers head north through grassy fields. The route consists of narrow two-track roads and singletrack sections that are sometimes rutted. The terrain is mostly flat with a gentle rise to the north, totaling approximately 1.12 miles. The trail is open year-round and typically takes about one hour to complete. The area features distinct geological and botanical sights. To the south, hikers can view the cliffs of Animas Mountain. To the east lies the hogback separating Fall Creek Valley from Animas Valley. To the west, pink and white rocky outcrops define the Logchutes plateau area. During late summer, the trail passes sunflowers and mini-lupine plants. The trail is unsanctioned and less popular than surrounding routes. It is described as a green difficulty singletrack or connector trail on some mapping services, though user reports emphasize the flat, accessible nature of the two-track and singletrack mix.
