The South Rim is the primary, developed access point for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, located 7 miles north of Montrose on CO Highway 347. It features a paved scenic drive with 12 car-accessible overlooks, including Gunnison Point and Pulpit Rock Overlook, offering views of the canyon's steep drop-offs and features like the Painted Wall. The area serves as a hub for hiking, with trails ranging from easy nature walks to strenuous inner canyon routes. Key facilities include a year-round visitor center, a large campground, and parking, though summer parking fills quickly. Water is available at the visitor center and campground during summer months but is trucked in and limited; no water is available in spring, fall, or winter. The Rim Rock Trail connects the campground and visitor center, featuring rocky terrain and stairs. Hikers should exercise caution near steep drop-offs and watch for cattle grazing. Bears are present, requiring hikers to keep backpacks within reach. The park is recovering from a July 2025 wildfire, and while the South Rim has reopened, some trails and facilities may remain closed.
