Southeast Arete

Southeast Arete is a moderate rock climbing route near Durango, Colorado, situated at 7,240 feet. The site features a distinct arete formation with parking available near the base. Pets are permitted on the climb. The route is accessible year-round, from January through December, though winter conditions may require additional gear. Climbers should expect a moderately challenging ascent with varied terrain and potentially exposed sections, requiring a high level of skill and physical fitness. The standard route ascends the obvious arete up the hill, just before an alcove, climbing on the right side of the arete. The climb involves interesting technical leads leading to a roof, with a clear crux move to reach it. After turning the roof on big holds, the route continues with easy but runout climbing to the anchor. The area offers excellent views and quality rock, set in a wilderness environment. First ascended by Clarence King in 1866, the route is considered a worthy destination for its graceful granite contours. The site remains open despite critical gold mountain fire evacuation orders in the general area.
