The Swampy Pass Trail Out and Back is a 11.4-mile hike near Crested Butte, Colorado, reaching an elevation of 8,921 feet. The route is generally considered moderate to challenging and typically takes about six hours to complete. Hikers traverse aspen forests with an understory of wildflowers such as veratrum and delphinium. The trail features approximately 1,700 feet of elevation gain and includes around ten stream crossings with paths through rocks and logs. Views of the Castles rock formations in the West Elk Wilderness are visible, particularly where trees become sparse near the end. Parking is available at the trailhead off Ohio Pass Road. The best time to visit is from June through October, though the trail is accessible year-round with varying conditions. Dogs are welcome on leash.
