The Taylor River is a high-altitude tailwater fishery located near Gunnison, Colorado, at an elevation of 9,429 feet. It flows from Taylor Reservoir through Gunnison County to Almont, offering a 20-mile stretch with approximately 11 miles of public shore and wade access. The river is classified as moderate difficulty, characterized by crystal-clear water, technical fly fishing conditions, and variable wading challenges due to slippery rocks and swift currents. It is designated as Gold Medal Water, supporting healthy populations of wild brown and rainbow trout, with many specimens exceeding 18 to 20 inches. The primary fishing season runs from April through October, though the Catch and Release section below the dam can be fished year-round. Key features include consistent cold water flows released from Taylor Park Dam, abundant bug activity, and distinct sections such as the Hog Trough near the dam and pocket water areas further downstream.
