The Beast

The Beast is a sport climbing route in Rifle Mountain Park, located on the Western Slope of Colorado. It sits at an elevation of 5,309 feet near Rifle. The route is classified as difficult and serves as a classic test piece for climbers aiming for grades around 5.13a. The rock is limestone, described as blue-grey and water-sculpted. The climb features a high first bolt and an opening sequence with distinct two and three finger pockets. Sustained traffic has darkened the footholds to a marble-like appearance. The route climbs directly up the center of a rock panel in an area known as the Wasteland. It requires six quickdraws plus two for the anchor. A variation called The Beast with Two Backs continues past the original anchors under a roof, adding long moves to good ceiling holds before finishing on slabby white stone. Parking is available at the site, and pets are permitted. The area remains accessible year-round, though it sees increased crowds on weekends from May through September.
