Trail 403 is a difficult, 4.2-mile mountain biking route near Gunnison and Crested Butte on Colorado's Western Slope, reaching a maximum elevation of 11,387 feet. The trail features a gentle climb through meadows to a saddle before descending into Gothic Valley via technical switchbacks. Riders typically complete the route in about one hour, though duration varies based on pace and snow conditions. The trail is accessible from April through October, with July often being the most reliable month for snow-free riding in the timbered sections. Parking is available at the trailhead, which was updated in August 2018 with a new lot and rerouted access. The route crosses private property, requiring riders to stay on marked paths. Pets are permitted. While the climb is manageable, the descent involves wild switchbacks and some walked sections, making it suitable for experienced riders seeking high-elevation views of the Elk Mountains.
