Trail 583, known as Crystal Peak, is a difficult mountain biking route located near Crested Butte and Gunnison on the Western Slope of Colorado. The trail spans 2.4 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 to 1,173 feet, reaching a summit elevation near 12,154 feet. It begins at Cement Creek Road (FSR #740) and connects to Trail 400 (Star Pass) and the Brush Creek Trail. The route is mostly above treeline, with 80 to 90 percent of the distance exposed. The terrain is rocky and steep, featuring technical features that may require hike-a-bike sections depending on rider fitness and trail conditions. Recent reroutes by the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association and Forest Service crews have improved the trail's sustainability. The typical riding duration is about one hour. Access is available year-round, though the trail is typically open from April through October depending on snow conditions. Parking is available near the trailhead. The route allows dogs, horses, and hiking in addition to mountain biking.
