The Upper Animas Ridge hike, commonly known as the Animas Mountain Upper Loop, is a 5.32-mile moderate trail located in Durango, Colorado. The route begins at a paved parking area accessible via West 4th Avenue and follows a doubletrack road for several hundred yards before entering the single-track network. The trail is signed and generally easy to follow, with the official route designated as a lollipop loop traversed in a counter-clockwise direction. Hikers gain approximately 1,430 feet of elevation, reaching the loop’s high point at 2.5 miles, which offers views of the Animas River Valley. The descent provides views of the La Plata Mountains to the west. The trail is closed seasonally for wildlife from December 1 to April 15. It is suitable for hiking, biking, and trail running.
