About
The Ute Trail to Ajax Sundeck is a 3.1-mile strenuous hike in Aspen, Colorado, located on the Western Slope. The route begins at a trailhead parking area on Ute Avenue and climbs to an elevation of 11,207 feet. The trail is rated difficult due to its steep incline and high altitude, with an estimated duration of approximately two hours. The first mile consists of the Ute Trail, which features dense forest and numerous steep switchbacks leading to Ute Rock, an overlook at 9,050 feet. Beyond this point, the trail continues as the Ajax Trail to the summit of Ajax Mountain and the Sundeck. The upper section combines singletrack with resort service roads, running adjacent to ski lifts. A Sundeck restaurant is available at the summit for refreshments. The Silver Queen Gondola connects the trail to town; it offers free rides down for hikers, and leashed dogs are permitted on the gondola. The trail is accessible year-round.
