About

The Visitor Center in Chimney Rock National Monument serves as the primary hub for hiking and archaeological exploration on the Western Slope. Located 50 miles southeast of Durango, the site preserves Ancestral Puebloan history within the San Juan National Forest. The monument spans 4,726 acres, featuring stabilized structures and trails that allow visitors to walk, ride horses, or bicycle. Hiking is the primary activity, with trails generally rated as moderate. The terrain includes elevation changes and natural hazards such as afternoon thunderstorms with lightning exposure on the mesa top. The Great House Trail features a narrow causeway with steep drop-offs. Pets are permitted on general trails but are not allowed on the specific interpretive trails. Service animals are welcome. Free outdoor kennels are available near the Visitor Center. Access to the Visitor Center is via a gravel road approximately one-half mile from the entrance gate. The gate operates from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm between May 15 and October 15. Outside this window, the gate is closed, but the monument remains accessible by foot, horse, or bike from October 1 through May 14. Parking is available at the Visitor Center. The typical duration for trail exploration is about 2 hours. Elevation sits at 6,619 feet, where hikers should account for altitude sickness, high temperatures, and low humidity.
