About
The West Face, also known as Sunshine Superman, is a rock climbing destination in Telluride, Colorado. The route climbs Needle Rock, an iconic tower visible from town and accessible via Lift 8. The climb begins at approximately 10,205 feet elevation and features a moderate difficulty rating. The most distinct feature is the crux, located in the first 20 feet of the ascent. This section requires navigating a hand or fist crack through a bulge, combining physical jamming with face climbing on conglomerate rock. After the crux, the route eases to 5.6 or easier, though the rock quality degrades as climbers ascend. Protection is a key consideration; solid gear is sparse, and loose rock is common throughout the route. There are four bolts near the top: three older star drives in poor condition and one modern bolt protruding from the rock. These are equalized with cord, providing a reliable anchor. The final approach involves a 75-foot scramble on the South Ridge to the summit, with an optional Class 2 descent via the North Ridge. The area offers parking and allows pets. Climbers should expect a duration of roughly 4 hours for the ascent. The route is open year-round, from January through December.
