'Rithmatic is a WI3-4 rock climbing located in CO Ice & Mixed > Ouray (Ice/Mixed) > Uncompahgre Gor > School Room. First ascent by unknown. This is the ice climb left of School Room Pillar. There is a rocky, left-facing dihedral between School Room Pillar and 'Rithmatic. Protection: This is the furthest right of the 'R' routes. Climb up the sheet of ice. The top was cauliflower-ed from ice making when we climbed it.
"Jay's Route" AKA No Problemo is a 5.10+ YDS sport, 70 ft (21 m) located in Ouray vicinity > Overlook Cliff. First ascent by unknown. This is a good warmup on the left edge of the Guides' Wall. Climb a steep, gray face to a fun crack finish. This route may feel runout for someone leading at their limit. Protection: This is left of "99 Problems."
99 Problems is a 5.12a YDS sport, 80 ft (24 m) located in Ouray vicinity > Overlook Cliff. First ascent by Michael Gilbert. This is the second route from the left on the Guides' Wall, just left of "Out Of Pocket". It has shiny silver hangers. Protection: Tricky climbing leads to a 11+ crux through a pocketed bulge, then a crimpy crux headwall awaits above.
A Fistful of Awesome is a 5.10 YDS trad, sport, 500 ft (152 m), 5 pitches, grade iii located in Ouray vicinity > Waterfall Wall. It's rated as a Grade III climb. This is a 5-pitch route. First ascent by Skoloda, Gibbs, Jackson, Hepp. This has 5 pitches of climbing with some great sections connected by a few low-angle bits. It has an awesome setting just downriver from the Waterfall Wall proper. This is another creation from the PEMA mastermind. There is a roof crux down low (with a bypass option) and a fun headwall at the top. It has very solid rock, especially for Ouray County. NOTE: No fist-jamming is required. P1. Green Slab, 5.6, 70 feet (?). From the water's edge of Red Mountain Creek, look for a vegetation-free green slab that trends up and right past a couple of bolts to a ledge with a big tree. P2. Ditreedral Roof, 5.10, 100 feet. Continue up green rock through a balancy dihedral to a well-protected, big roof. The crux is reach dependent. Finish up a short face past a big snag to a bolted belay on another great ledge. NOTE: There is a great 5.7 bypass option that takes a face crack above the ditreedral to the left. P3. The Wave, 5.8, 100 feet. Scramble up some lower angle steps to a steep, fun, juggy prow then through another upper wave to a huge ledge with a giant pine tree. P4. Forest, 5.7, 105 feet. Climb past a couple of short faces through the forest, then wander up and right on low angle rock to a two-bolt belay on the sidewalk ledge. P5. 'Best 5.9 pitch in Ouray County', 100 feet. Climb straight up from the belay on amazing rock with choice edging moves. Don't forget to enjoy the views of the Uncompahgre Gorge. There is a 2 bolt anchor at the top. It is possible to walk off from the top, but it is better to rap/lower to the sidewalk ledge. Protection: LOW WATER (preferred): Cross the Waterfall Wall Tyrolean then scramble up the gully 50 feet. Go right and find the waterfall wall rappel station. You can leave packs here. Do a picturesque 45m rappel next to the waterfall (two ropes or leave one fixed). Head downriver 100 yards through trees until you run out of land. Flake yer rope and belay from the edge of the crystal clear waters of Red Mountain Creek. HIGH WATER: Don't rappel or you'll get soaked. Continue scrambling up the gully then up the 4th class ramp. BE CAREFUL! Pass the bolted anchor at the top of Ruby Slippers and then a white fixed rope at the top of the El Sueno ledge. Continue another 30 feet past a pine tree with a rap sling. This is the Sidewalk Ledge. Traverse right out the flat, level ledge to a two-bolt belay anchor. This is the top of pitch 4 of Fistful of Awesome. (4) 30 m raps down the route will get you to the creek. Descent: Lower/rap from the top of P5 to the Sidewalk Ledge. Walk upriver on the ledge to the 4th class ramp and find a rap sling on a small pine tree. A 35m rap gets you most of the way down the ramp, so watch the ends of your rope. Scamble down the gully past the main waterfall rap then to the tyrolean.
A&W's Whipper is a WI2+ PG13 trad, tr, ice, 65 ft (20 m) located in CO Ice & Mixed > Ouray (Ice/Mixed) > Uncompahgre Gor > Kiddie Wall. First ascent by unknown. Not a very long route but a great beginner route. The crux is near the top when the face angles out somewhat. Protection: Ouray Ice Park, Kids Climbing Wall, far left route by the trees.
Astro Zombies is a 5.10- YDS sport, 500 ft (152 m), 6 pitches, grade ii located in Ouray vicinity > Misfits Wall. It's rated as a Grade II climb. This is a 6-pitch route. First ascent by PD / SVS. This is the first route on the Misfits Wall heading pretty much up the center. There are 2 easy sections of 4th Class between pitches 1-2 and 2-3. The rest is fine, moderate quartzite climbing with an awesome 5.10 last pitch. Pitch 1. 5.9. Start from the large pine tree at the base of Misfits Wall. Head for the A-frame break in the overlap above (crux), 7 bolts + 2 bolt rappel anchor - clip this anchor on the way by and keep going over 4th Class terrain above to anchor at the base of the wall behind a huge pine tree. Pitch 2. 5.8. Follow 6 bolts up amazing face. You can get an optional fingers to mid-size cam midway. Var. London Dungeon 5.11, climbs the obvious, left-facing corner to the right. It is steep and awkward with powerful smearing. Face the wrong way, and it will feel like you've been put on the rack! 4 bolts, #0.5/0.75 Camalot. Pitch 3. 5.4. Step out of belay nook, and go left towards the gully across slabs/corners with 1 bolt, then 4th Class up to large ledge system with rappel anchor on wall. Pitch 4. 5.9. Start just to the right of the obvious gully following 6 bolts up good rock. A finger cam after last bolt gets you up to a 2 bolt belay in V-slot. Pitch 5. 5.9+. Mantel out of V slot, up across slab to bolts on wall. 4 bolts lead up through some shite rock and some good rock...it will get your attention. A finger cam protects after the bolts and leads up to 2 bolt anchor at the base of a ramp and the headwall. Pitch 6. 5.10. Start up corner/ramp to the right placing wide hands/hands cams to reach 3 bolts on the wall. Pure enjoyment follows as you surmount the headwall through the railroad tracks, but you got to find the holds first! A finger cam over the lip, and a higher bolt gets you to the anchor on top. Var. 5.7 R. Continue up ramp passing bolts, turn corner, and continue back left to summit. Rappel the route. A 60 meter rope can make all the rappels except down pitch 4, but you can step into the gully and downclimb if you need to. Be careful on the awkward sideways rap on pitch 3, especially in the rain. Protection: Approach as for Waterfall Wall/Princess Ella's.... Continue past the start of PEMA 50 yds until you reach a fixed hand line. Head straight up above handline to big pine tree at the base of the rock and bolts.
