Animas High School

Born from a mountain bike ride through the hills of Durango, Animas High School opened its doors in fall 2009 as a tuition-free public charter school. What began as a vision by local pediatrician Jesse Hutt and Gisele Pansze to reconnect underserved students with education has grown into a dynamic learning environment modeled after San Diego’s High Tech High. Our students tackle real-world challenges through project-based learning, developing critical thinking and civic responsibility alongside academic rigor. We offer dual enrollment opportunities, internships, and post-secondary planning woven directly into the curriculum, ensuring every young person graduates ready for college, career, and life. Founded by a dedicated team including founders like Holly Shure and Holly Jobson, we started in a renovated Chinese restaurant with underground garages converted into classrooms before moving to Twin Buttes. Today, we continue to provide small classes and personal attention in a close-knit, inclusive community where every student is known and supported. Our unique Osprey Community engages in experiential education adventures and presentations of learning that go beyond traditional testing, fostering a life of purpose and impact.
