Box Cañon Park Visitor Center

A 285-foot waterfall plunges into a narrow quartzite canyon just south of Ouray, marking the point where Canyon Creek spills thousands of gallons of water per minute. This geological formation, known locally as Box Cañon Falls, features rock walls that tower nearly 100 feet over the falling water. The area serves as a primary habitat for the elusive Black Swift, a small bird that breeds in the region's waterfalls and caves. These swifts are notable for their long-distance migration to Brazil, where they remain airborne for up to 99% of the time during their eight-month wintering period. The visitor center provides context on this natural wonder and the local mining history of the San Juan Mountains, which saw a surge in gold and silver finds starting in the 1870s. The site offers visitors a chance to observe the swifts and learn about the geological and historical forces that shaped the town.
