Crags Crest Trailhead

The Crags Crest Trailhead marks the beginning of a popular ascent to the summit of the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain. Hikers tackle a gradual 2.5-mile incline that transitions into a mile-long traverse along the narrow, scenic ridge known as the spine. The route offers expansive views of numerous alpine lakes and open meadows, where grazing cattle require caution for dogs and horses. While the path is well-maintained and easy to follow, some sections feature thrilling exposed ridges. Visitors often choose the 5-mile out-and-back route to the highest point rather than the more difficult loop back to the parking lot, which can be steep and exposed due to fallen trees. The trailhead serves as a gateway to diverse activities, including horse and ATV trails, with winter access for skiing and snowmobiling. Facilities include parking and restrooms, making it a family-friendly destination. A common strategy for experienced hikers involves parking a car at the unlisted West trailhead near the Crag Crest campground, allowing for a longer 7+ mile point-to-point hike. The area is particularly striking in mid-July when wildflowers bloom across the trail.
