Gunnison Gorge Wilderness
About
Congress designated the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness in 1999, creating a 17,700-acre sanctuary managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Crawford. Fourteen miles of the Gunnison River carve through a unique double-canyon system defined by black granite and colorful sandstone, offering visitors a wild backcountry experience. The area is renowned for exceptional whitewater boating and gold medal trout fishing, attracting anglers and paddlers alike. Visitors must obtain self-issued permits to access the wilderness, adhering to regulations that govern group size and length of stay. Facilities include parking areas and restrooms, making the site accessible for families and those paying by credit card. The landscape supports diverse activities, from fly fishing to walk-wade fishing, set against the backdrop of the river’s continuous flow through the gorge.
