Mill Creek Campground
About
Perched at 9,500 feet along the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, Mill Creek Campground serves as a high-altitude base camp for exploring the San Juan Mountains. Situated 14 miles southwest of Lake City, this Bureau of Management site offers 22 campsites shaded by mixed spruce, fir, and aspen forests. Each site accommodates up to eight people and two vehicles, featuring metal fire rings with cooking grates, picnic tables, and bear-proof food storage boxes. Essential amenities include vault restrooms, hand pumps for potable water, and bear-proof trash dumpsters, though there are no electric hookups. The campground is accessible from June through early September, with hosts on-site during that period. Visitors utilize the location for fly fishing the adjacent river, hiking trails leading to three 14,000-foot peaks, and accessing the legendary Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway via licensed OHVs or high-clearance 4-wheel-drive vehicles. The surrounding Redcloud Peak and Handies Peak Wilderness Study Areas provide extensive off-highway vehicle routes and hiking opportunities, while the nearby Hinsdale County Museum offers insight into the region's hardrock mining and railway history.
